Carter Akins assumed the role of Principal at C.B Greer Elementary in July 2017. In joining the community of C.B. Greer and its vision of “Growing. Learning. Changing the World”, he looks forward to striving for excellence and making a positive difference. Helping teachers with Georgia Standards of Excellence, promoting solid instructional strategies and programs like Calkins Reading and Writing and Eureka Math, overseeing district curriculum and assessment initiatives, working with parents on new ideas for students, and getting to know students, are just a few of the many ways he seeks to enhance teaching and learning at C.B. Greer Elementary. Akins previously served as Principal of Oglethorpe Point Elementary School from July 2012 - June 2017. During his tenure at Oglethorpe Point Elementary, the school was recognized with the Silver Award for Highest Performing by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, started Compassion It, and moved students on to greater achievements in reading and math. Prior to the principalship, Akins served in the elementary school setting (C.B. Greer Elementary) as a classroom teacher, Instructional Coach, Coordinator of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, and Assistant Principal. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia (B.A. in English) and Georgia Southern University (M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Ed.D. in Educational Leadership), and he completed teacher certification at Armstrong Atlantic State University and the gifted endorsement at Valdosta State University. Akins enjoys the excitement each day brings at C.B. Greer Elementary, and he is proud to be a shark!
Cheryl Berry was named Assistant Principal at C.B. Greer Elementary in 2016. Prior to her start at C.B. Greer, Berry served as the Assistant Principal of Goodyear Elementary School with Glynn County Schools and also Assistant Principal of Instruction at Eagle Springs Elementary in Houston County. As a teacher, she spent her time teaching Special Education (Houston County), First Grade (Satilla Marsh Elementary), and Kindergarten (C.B. Greer Elementary). While serving with Houston County Schools, Berry was a member of the executive committee for the Council of Exceptional Children and was named 2013 Teacher of the Year for her school and top five finalist for the school system. She obtained her teaching degree at Georgia Southern University and M.Ed. in Special Education from Walden University. She continues her studies at Georgia College and State University specializing in Educational Leadership. Cheryl Berry promotes a safe and encouraging climate at C.B. Greer Elementary and looks forward to helping Greer Sharks swim to First Class!
Dr. Diana Thompson became the Instructional Coach and Coordinator of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme at C.B. Greer Elementary in July 2015. With Glynn County Schools, she has served in various positions including secretary, paraprofessional, classroom teacher, Early Intervention Program teacher, and coach (cheer, tennis, and softball). As Instructional Coach, she works with teachers and school leaders to employ evidence-based practices in classrooms. Dr. Thompson enjoys helping teachers be their best by supporting literacy and job-embedded professional learning with the goals of increasing student engagement, improving student achievement, and building teacher capacity. She holds an AB in Elementary Education from Armstrong State Atlantic University, a M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education, an Ed.S in Teacher Leadership, and an Ed.D. in Teacher Leadership from Walden University. She also obtained Educational Leadership Certification from Valdosta State University. Dr. Thompson is an active member of the Georgia Association of Curriculum and Instructional Supervisors (GACIS) and loves to play golf and spend time with her family.
